April Garden Guide · Zone 7a-7b

April: Peak Planting

What to do in your Oklahoma garden right now — updated every month.

Tasks This Month

  • Plant warm-season vegetables after last frost (around April 15 for OKC)
  • Deadhead spring bulbs as they finish blooming — leave foliage to die back naturally
  • Apply slow-release fertilizer to perennial beds and roses
  • Mow bermuda grass for the first time when it reaches 2 inches
  • Set up rain gauges and soaker hoses before summer heat

What to Plant

  • Transplant tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, and melons outdoors
  • Direct sow beans, corn, and okra after soil warms to 65°F
  • Plant annual flowers: zinnias, marigolds, petunias, and lantana
  • Install native perennials: salvia, rudbeckia, and native grasses

Watch For

  • Tomato hornworms emerging — hand-pick or use Bt spray
  • Squash vine borers laying eggs at base of squash plants
  • Hail storms — April is peak hail season in Oklahoma
  • Powdery mildew on squash and cucumbers — improve air circulation

April Pro Tip

After April 15, Oklahoma's warm nights allow tomatoes to set fruit reliably. Plant them deep — bury 2/3 of the stem for stronger root development.
